Random Groups by Size

Paste a list of names, choose the desired group size (for example 3 per group), and the calculator will form as many random groups as needed.

Empty lines are ignored. You can paste from a class list, spreadsheet column, or any text document.

Remove duplicate names (each person appears only once).

This affects only the order of names inside each group, not which people are grouped together.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the random groups by size calculator create groups?

It builds a clean participant list, shuffles it randomly, and then fills groups with the chosen size until everyone is assigned. The number of groups is determined from the participant count and the desired group size.

What happens if the number of participants is not a multiple of the group size?

The calculator forms as many full groups as possible and puts the remaining participants in the last group. That final group will have fewer members than the desired group size.

What does handle duplicates do when making random groups?

When enabled, repeated names are kept only once so each person is counted a single time in the grouping. When disabled, repeated names remain in the list and can affect who appears in the participant pool.

Does sorting names inside each group change the random grouping?

No. Sorting only changes the display order of names within each group after grouping is done, not which participants are grouped together.
