What this calculator does
This tool measures how much time has passed between two precise moments:
a start date and time and a reference date and time.
It is ideal for questions such as:
- “Exactly how long have I lived, including hours and minutes?”
- “How much time has passed since I started this project?”
- “How many total seconds have elapsed between these two events?”
Unlike a simple age in years, this calculator works directly with continuous time and provides:
- A breakdown into days, hours, minutes, and seconds.
- The total number of days between the two moments.
- The total hours, minutes, and seconds lived in that interval.
How to use the calculator
-
In “Start date and time”, choose the moment when the time period began.
This can be a date of birth, the start of a job, or any event you care about.
-
In “Reference date and time”, keep the default (the current date and time)
or change it to another moment to see the time lived up to that point.
-
Click “Calculate”.
-
Read the first line for the detailed breakdown in days, hours, minutes, and seconds.
The colored boxes underneath show the same time span expressed entirely in days,
entirely in hours, entirely in minutes, and entirely in seconds.
-
Use “Reset” to clear everything, or “Fill example” to
load a sample start date and time.
How the time difference is calculated
Internally, the calculator treats each selected moment (start and reference) as an exact
point in time with year, month, day, hour, minute, and seconds:
-
Both moments are converted to an internal number of milliseconds since a fixed reference
point in the computer system.
-
The difference between these two numbers gives the total elapsed time
between the start and reference moments.
-
This difference is first expressed in seconds, then decomposed step by step:
whole days are counted, then the remaining seconds are split into hours, minutes, and final seconds.
-
Using the same total number of seconds, the calculator also computes:
- Total days (seconds divided by 86 400).
- Total hours (seconds divided by 3 600).
- Total minutes (seconds divided by 60).
- Total seconds (the full count of seconds in the interval).
This calculator focuses purely on time elapsed between two moments you choose.
It does not store any personal information and can be reused for any dates or events you want
to explore, from lifetimes to shorter projects and milestones.
