Calculate the pressure exerted by a solid object on a surface using average pressure, local pressure, and a simple tilt/load-shift model. \[ \begin{aligned} P_{\mathrm{avg}} &= \frac{W}{A} \\ W &= mg \end{aligned} \] For a rectangular base with small load offsets \(e_x\) and \(e_y\), the local pressure is approximated by \[ \begin{aligned} p(x,y) &= P_{\mathrm{avg}} \left( 1+\frac{12e_xx}{L^2} +\frac{12e_yy}{W_b^2} \right). \end{aligned} \]

Frequently Asked Questions

What is solid pressure?

Solid pressure is the normal force exerted by a solid object divided by the contact area. For an object resting on a horizontal surface, the force is usually the weight W = mg.

What is the formula for average pressure?

The average pressure is P_avg = W/A = mg/A, where W is weight and A is the contact area.

Why does a smaller contact area create larger pressure?

Pressure is force divided by area. If the same weight is supported by a smaller area, the pressure increases.

How is pressure under a rectangular block calculated?

For a centered load, the average pressure is P = mg/(L x W). If the load is eccentric, local pressure can be estimated with p = P_avg(1 + 12e_x x/L^2 + 12e_y y/W^2).

What does eccentric load mean?

An eccentric load means the resultant weight does not pass through the center of the contact area. This can happen when an object is tilted or when its center of mass is not centered.

Why is corner pressure higher for a tilted block?

Tilting shifts the resultant load toward one side or corner, so that region carries more of the weight and has higher local pressure.

What does negative predicted pressure mean?

A real surface cannot pull on the object, so negative predicted pressure means the full-contact linear model has broken down. The object may partially lift off, rock, or tip.

How is sphere contact pressure estimated?

The calculator uses an effective circular contact patch area A = pi a_c^2. Real sphere contact pressure depends on deformation and material stiffness.

Can this calculator handle irregular bases?

Yes. Choose the irregular or manual base option and enter the contact area and volume directly.

Is the heat map exact?

The heat map is based on a simplified rigid-body linear pressure model. It is useful for learning and estimates, but real contact pressure can require detailed material and structural analysis.
